I will admit, it was my Mom who first told me to watch Starz’s series Outlander (anyone who’s a fan knows being tipped off to this show by your Mom, or watching it with your Mom might be a tad awkward) but, upon watching it by myself, I immediately fell into the romantic escapism of it that has so many wonderful elements. You really do kind of fall into this show, you want to step into the screen. There’s time travel, spirituality, history, romance: It’s all there. But really from the get go, one of my favorites part of Outlander was its lead – the wonderful Caitriona Balfe – who I always felt brings serious acting chops and authenticity to the series.

Sitting across from Balfe at the Tata Suite at the Pierre Hotel, I realized one thing pretty quickly: She might just be one of the chillest humans I’ve interviewed. Yes, “chill” is truly the word for it. And when I asked her if she’s a romantic Balfe didn’t think twice: “I don’t think I’m a romantic I think actually I am pretty cynical. I think this show definitely made me more romantic…but yeah, Valentines Day is not my thing. I know. My poor husband.”

A cynic talking to a cynic: These are my favorite kinds of interviews.

I suggested that maybe she’s an old soul, rather than a romantic (as I know Balfe is a voracious reader) and to that Balfe characterized herself as somewhat of a blend: “I’m very young at heart, but combined with a bit of an old soul. I have two sides of myself, one side is this crazy-likes-to-party side, and then the other side is likes-to-hibernate-and-keep-quiet-and-read. Those two sides constantly battle and that’s why I’m crazy!”

OK this was getting witchy. And it was the last line of her answer I especially loved. I’ve always been convinced all the best people are crazy.

To rewind some odd years, Balfe first got her start in modeling, an opportunity that arose while she was at drama school in Dublin, “I got scouted, and it was like ‘OK I can stay in Dublin in this shitty theater program or move to Paris.’ So I said ‘I’m moving to Paris.’ So then I was living in New York and it was coming up to almost a decade doing modeling, and I was miserable. I was in a bad relationship and I wasn’t doing what I wanted in life…So I broke up with the bad relationship and moved to LA and started taking acting classes.”

Something I think was key to Balfe’s success is she never really considered things wouldn’t go her way: “I was very naive and I lived in a little bubble of delusion that it was going to work out. I think that was the best thing. I didn’t know how I was going to get a job but I was just like…‘It’ll happen.’”

When I expressed how rare and refreshing that was to hear about an actresses’ start, Balfe chimed in pretty quickly, “I mean I’d come out of fashion so I was deeply insecure and my self confidence was in the toilet. I think that’s what happens after spending ten years in the fashion industry.”

(I agreed with that last sentiment whole-heartedly.)

“But I loved that I had those years to study and get my feet back underneath me properly.” Balfe said.

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read if you have not yet watched the fourth episode of Season 5 of “Outlander,” entitled “The Company We Keep.”

After the horror show at the Beardsleys’ cabin in last week’s “Outlander” episode, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) found themselves heading out to rejoin the militia with an infant in tow. They caught up with Roger (Richard Rankin), Fergus (Cesar Domboy) and the rest of the men in Brownsville where all hell had broken loose.

It all started because one of Jamie’s men, Isaiah Morton (Jon Tarcy), had an affair with Alicia Brown (Anna Burnett), the daughter of Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) and niece of Richard Brown (Chris Larkin), the men for whom Brownsville is named. Her father disapproved not only because Alicia and Isaiah weren’t married, but also because he lost out on the dowry her betrothed had promised the family.

So when Roger, Fergus, Isaiah and the militia came riding into town, Lionel and his men started shooting at them, demanding they turn Isaiah over for what he did to Lionel’s daughter. Roger tried to make peace by breaking out Jamie’s whiskey, but then he had to tell Lionel that his settlement was required to provide men to the militia. Lionel refused and said Roger was lucky his men hadn’t killed Isaiah for what he did.

So then Lionel refused to provide men to fight and still wanted to exact revenge on Isaiah, but Roger also managed to lose some of Jamie’s militia members in the process. They didn’t approve of him putting his weapon down and trying to reason with Lionel and they left. So things were in a fine state when Jamie and Claire finally arrived.

Roger filled Jamie in on what happened and Jamie wryly asked, “What were you going to do when the whiskey ran out?” Roger replied, “I was hoping you would arrive before then.”

Jamie gave Roger a bit of a dressing down at how he handled the situation, though it really seemed like Roger was doing his best. Anyway, Jamie insisted that Isaiah marry Alicia and that was when it came out that Isaiah was already married. Jamie dressed Isaiah down as well, but then he cut him loose and let him run off so that Lionel and his men wouldn’t kill him.

Outlander‘s Caitriona Balfe, aka Claire Randall/ Fraser, held a fireside chat at Wizard World Cleveland when she spoke to fans about the show.

The cast of Outlander has been blessed with this show and are truly grateful for the experience.

“I mean, it’s changed my life completely. But I think what I really have recognized is the power of storytelling, to connect people. And that’s been one of the most amazing things about getting this job and being part of this incredible world that Diana (Gabaldon) created,” said Balfe. I mean, we just get to ride her (Diana) coattails and be part a of this and it’s everywhere. People who are in love with this story, in love with these characters and that’s amazing. I’m very aware that I’m in a place of privilege because that doesn’t happen very often.”

Cast mates Lacroix and Rankin completely agree.

So, we’re now in season five, what’s in store for Claire.
“I think last season was very traditionary and I don’t think we sort of found our footing as much and I think that’s really sort of settled this season and it’s also because the Fraser’s have really settled. What I love about the season for Claire is that she has her beautiful moments. She has her incredible husband. She has a wonderful daughter, her son-in-law, you know, this extended family and she has her surgery. This is something she didn’t really have last season. She got to be a healer, in times of emergency do some of her work, but now she’s actually got her established surgery and I think that for Claire, it just feels, this season, that she’s very fulfilled. And there’s some bad things coming because we all know… but it’s just been really lovely to see her use every side of herself, you know, be a wife a lover and mother and a surgeon, or doctor.”

Balfe did share a fun story from season 5 episode 3. It involved some damn goats!
