Caitriona Balfe is ‘terrified’ to direct Sam Heughan in Outlander episode for ‘jam-packed’ season 7

Balfe joked that she told Heughan she’d direct all his scenes in one take.

Caitriona Balfe is finally ready to direct an episode of Outlander — even if it scares her more than the looming Revolutionary War.

The actress confirmed on Wednesday’s episode of Live With Kelly & Mark that season 7 of the Starz epic will pick up where season 6 left off, with her character, Claire, “in jail, which is always a good place to be,” she joked.

“It’s such an epic season. The Revolutionary War has started. Our characters, Claire and Jamie, are caught up right in the middle of it, and I think this season is the most action, jam-packed, and sort of epic that we’ve done since season 1,” she promised, adding that she’s a bit apprehensive to step behind the camera to direct an episode of the time-hopping romantic saga.

“I’ve been asking for a while — it’s something I’ve been interested in,” she said. “Our crew have been so supportive. We’ve been there 10 years, so they’re like a proper family. It’s just been amazing. I started doing some second unit already, and I’m going to do a full episode.”

Though she’s “terrified” to helm an episode — and teased that she told her costar Sam Heughan that she’d direct all his scenes in one take — she said “it’ll be good” for everyone involved.

Balfe also stressed that season 8 will be the show’s last, but said season 7’s 16-episode run will satisfy viewers who’ve stuck with Claire and Jamie since the beginning.

“Her future is very precarious,” Balfe previously told EW of season 7. “We don’t really know what’s going to happen. All we know is that the normal systems of law have broken down.”

Caitriona Balfe and Rachel Brosnahan Join Rami Malek In ‘Amateur’

Caitríona Balfe, Rachel Brosnahan and Laurence Fishburne are joining Rami Malek in 20th Century’s thriller Amateur. Slow Horses helmer James Hawes is directing.

The story follows a CIA cryptographer who, after his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack, demands his bosses go after them. When it becomes clear they won’t act due to conflicting internal priorities, he blackmails the agency into training him and letting him go after them himself.

Gary Spinelli penned the most recent draft. Hutch Parker and Dan Wilson are producing, with Malek executive producing.

Balfe is set to reprise her role as Claire in the Starz hit series Outlander, which is set to have its seventh season premiere on June 16. She is coming off her BAFTA-nominated role in the Oscar-winning Belfast.

Brosnahan is reprising her lead role on the final season of Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. She already has won one Emmy for the part and is expected to be in the award season mix this upcoming award season.

Fishburne was most recently seen in John Wick: Chapter 4 as well as Netflix’s The School of Good and Evil. He recently wrapped production on Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis.

Balfe is repped by WME, Emptage Hallet, Cognition, lawyer Darren Trattner, Brosnahan is repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Fishburne is repped by CAA, Landmark Artists Management and Del Shaw Moonves. [Source]

Outlander is going to war in season 7: ‘This season is so epic’

“There’s always another war,” says star Caitriona Balfe, previewing the upcoming season.

War! What is it good for? Storytelling on Outlander, it seems.

After several seasons dotted with the embers of rebellion, the American Revolution has at last erupted into a raging fire, rapidly approaching the Frasers’ doorstep. The hit Starz series plunges the Fraser clan and viewers into war for their seventh season, supersized at 16 episodes.

Premiering June 16, season 7 will be divided into two parts, with the back-half of the episodes not airing until 2024. This follows an abbreviated season 6, which clocked in at eight episodes and left Claire (Caitriona Balfe) on her way to prison for the murder of Malva Christie (Jessica Reynolds).

“We’ve left her in this prison,” says Balfe. “Her future is very precarious. We don’t really know what’s going to happen. All we know is that the normal systems of law have broken down.” It’s a startling cliffhanger, even by Outlander standards, though it was not the intended ending of season 6, which was cut short due to Balfe’s pregnancy and COVID delays.

Still, don’t expect Outlander to merely tack on those last four episodes to the start of season 7. “There are some major story threads from [season] 6,” says executive producer Matthew Roberts. “We do cover those, but we meld them into ending one section of stories at the exact same time as starting new stories. We had to rewrite them completely to get them into new stories going forward.”

Those new stories mean it’s out of the whiskey barrel and into the bottle for the Fraser family.

“The kitchen sink is what you can expect,” teases Roberts. “We load that kitchen sink up with everything. In comparison to other seasons, there’s more going on in season 7 than every one of our other seasons, not necessarily combined, but pretty close to it. We finally get to the Revolutionary War and how it affects all of our characters.”

Adds Balfe: “This season is so epic. It’s the season that’s closest to season 1 in terms of the scope and the span.”
