Few women on television have been through more than Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser. A nurse who was in the thick of it during World War 2, Claire was re-connecting with her husband, Frank, in post-war Scotland when she was transported back to the 18th century via a circle of mystical stones.

The ever-practical Claire made herself useful among the clans of Scotland and connected deeply with Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), whom she eventually married. The war between Scotland and England drove the couple to France, and in the second season of the Starz drama, Claire and Jamie mixed with the high society of Paris while enduring a bruising series of personal and political setbacks. The end of the second season saw them back in Scotland as a defining battle loomed, and then separated when Claire returned to her own time — without her beloved Jamie.

Caitriona Balfe’s unerring ability to communicate Claire’s complex inner life while the character went through all those changes is one reason the lush drama has been such a hit. Balfe talked to Variety about what it was like to take on such a complicated and challenging role as a newcomer to television, what stuck with her most about Season Two, and what’s to come for Claire and the people she loves.

With this role, at times it almost seems like you’re not really just playing one part or appearing in one show — it’s almost like you’re doing multiple shows, because there are so many timelines and the settings can be so different. Does it ever feel that way for you?

I mean, definitely, some days it can be a little confusing. I think when we came back to Season Two and we were in Paris, and we had all of the Parisian sets and it was a whole new set of characters, it was quite jarring in the beginning. Essentially your character remains the same, even though they go through such different situations, and you have Claire with Frank in the ’40s and then she’s with Jamie and then she goes back, so it can be quite confusing in some ways. But I’ve always thought that Claire retains her center, no matter where she is, and that’s one of the things I love about the character.

It’s been just under four months since Outlander fans had to say good-bye to Claire and Jamie Fraser during the emotional Season 2 finale. But it’s also a long wait until the time-traveling, star-crossed couple returns to Starz for Season 3 next April. Thankfully, in the meantime, there’s a new Blu-ray edition of Season 2 out on Tuesday, November 1. And, for the true devotees to both the show and the Diana Gabaldon novels, there’s also a special Collector’s Edition that features an exclusive excerpt from the upcoming Outlander novel, “Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.” Series star Caitriona Balfe took a break from her grueling 11-month shooting schedule to reflect back on Season 2 and give a preview of why fans missing the steamier side of Outlander won’t be disappointed by Season 3.

V.F. HWD: Did you hear that over the weekend Diana Gabaldon announced her Outlander novels would probably be ending with book 10?

Caitriona Balfe: I didn’t actually hear that!

Let me fetch the exact quote! She said: “It’ll be the very last thing in the last book, which I think is probably book 10.” Given that she’s already working on book nine right now, fans are panicking. What do you think?

I think it’s amazing that she’s done even 10 novels, and I’m sure at some point Jamie and Claire—they’re getting on there in age by the time we get into the eighth and ninth books—I guess it’d have to be inevitable.

I know some fans will be devastated to have no more book story. Did you ever suspect, when you signed on, that this particular fandom would be so intense?

No, it’s been really amazing to be part of something that fans have such an ownership of. These characters have played such an important part in so many people’s lives. It’s incredible to be swept along in it and to have fans share the love that they have for the characters and for the books with you. I’m very aware of how lucky I am in that respect. I was so blind to it all when I first started. I just found out that these were books the week I was asked to come back for casting. I read the first book, but I didn’t even know at that point how many there were. It’s been quite an eye-opening journey the last three years.

As Cait is currently promoting “Money Monster” in Cannes, W Magazine took the opportunity to do a wonderful interview and photoshoot. I have added outtakes to our gallery, and you can find the interview below. Don’t forget to check out the original article over at wmagazine.com:

What was your “I made it!” moment? Last year when the show [Outlander] came out and one of those buses drove by, it was such a Carrie [Bradshaw] moment. I was like, “holy shit I’m on the side of a bus.”

Before your acting career took off, you were a successful model in your own right, walking at international fashion weeks… Yes, I walked for Chanel, Michael Kors, Dior, Balenciaga, everyone. But my girlfriends and I would always laugh because we were the blue collar models. We did a lot of shows and we did well, but I was never known, which helped when I made the switch to acting because I think being a model comes with such a stigma.

What prompted the transition from modeling to acting? My modeling career was trickling down…I hit that point where I was like “ok, I’m not happy, this was never my passion.” I was taking acting classes in New York, and I wanted to make sure I had the passion and talent for it. So I moved to L.A. to try it seriously. I had read an article where Amy Adams talked about her acting coach. So I enrolled in that teacher’s class and started from scratch. I was 29 about to turn 30. People say I shouldn’t talk about my age, but if you focus on the work, it shouldn’t matter what age you are.
